Animal Shifters are supernatural beings. In the canon for the world in which my shifters live, they differ quite a bit from many popular or traditional werewolf concepts.
1. They have two forms, human form and animal form. They do not have that half man-beast form that is so popular in many venues.
2. They are relatively immortal like vampires. They can be killed but it is a lot harder and barring such circumstances, they do have lives spanning many centuries.
3. They have high metabolisms, thus they need to eat large meals, and primarily meals with high portions of meat. Their higher metabolisms also mean they tend to have higher body temperatures than humans.
4. They are susceptible to silver. It will cause burns to exposed skin, and can effectively poison them if internalized.
Social structure-
Most animal shifters tend to be more solitary, though much of that depends on their animal.
Some shifters will join together to form social groups similar to an extended family or loose clan which shares the basic hierarchy as a pack might.
The Alpha serves as the leader, with the beta being the second in command. Betas may assume temporary leadership if the Alpha is absent, or unable to lead due to illness or injury.
